Decades before this All American game became one of the most played
backyard sport, it was introduced as a form of leisure by college
students who wanted to play a version that combine English Rugby and
football (soccer). American football has been played since the mid
1800's and the first college game occurred between Princeton and Rutgers
on Nov. 6 1869. From its humble beginnings, American football has
become a multi-billion dollar business in its professional form, better
known today as the National Football League (NFL). Once watched by
no more than a handful of loyal sideline enthusiasts, NFL games are
now available for worldwide viewing. In fact, the seasonal Championship
game, the Super Bowl, has been called one of the most watched sporting
events of all time with a viewing audience from around the globe televised
in dozens of languages. Recently the NFL introduced the game to China
in the form of flag football (www.nflchina.com). Unlike tackle football where dislocation of joints often occurs, the only dislocating in flag football is the ribbon or ˇ§flagˇ¨ that is attached to the player's waist.
The game Flag Football in fact has been around nearly as long as tackle football. Flag football was developed on military bases in the early 1940's as a recreational sport for military personal. Recreational leagues soon developed in the early 1950's. Flag football is still a popular past time for many collegians and it is as equally popular among young executives.
